The opportunity to network is a recurring theme in our extensive coverage of the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) National Conference in this issue. And it's an aspect of the profession that foodservice executives are as passionate about as they are about the food they prepare and the service they deliver.
Having that opportunity to meet with your colleagues to discuss and gather advice on all of the issues on college campuses is invaluable — it is impossible to visit every campus, speak to every foodservice employee and see every operation up close, although that is certainly on our bucket list here at On-Campus Hospitality.
Without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable things about the conference for us is to meet with so many of you and hear your opinions on the latest trends and issues facing your campus, new projects and other happenings.
We have found that the college and university foodservice industry is made up of an amazing group of people who go out of their way to make people feel taken care of — it isn't just a profession for them, it's a way of life.
That was the sentiment expressed by Gretchen Couraud, the new executive director of NACUFS, who spoke with us about her new role. “This is a profession of extroverted people who are excited that you are a part of their community,” she said. “I have noticed this right away! I have also been extremely impressed by their commitment to customer service. It is not just serving food on a plate; they are serious about this being professional, high-quality nutrition, excellent service.”
Gretchen hit it right on the head. Even in her first few months on the job, she has figured out that great people make up this industry — and she hasn't even met all of you yet. We can tell you this, Gretchen: you will not be disappointed when you meet so many more NACUFS members at the conference.
Just as they treat their clients, customers and guests on campus, you will find every one of them will do everything they can to be helpful.
